Disrupt Your Life

Disrupt your life, business, relationships, or even your body, and engage in the power of a new year!

You may have noticed that we as human beings have a limited ability to pay attention – you know, really be present – which is why we benefit from declaring publicly what we will pay attention to each year. What we pay attention to grows and thrives. This is what makes goal setting, declared intentions, and resolutions a sound strategy.

However, as a result of this inability to be present 100% of the time, we unconsciously design an environment to depend upon, which allows us to free up mental power and the ability to pay attention. To say it simply, we have an unconscious dependence on our environment to determine WHO we will be and WHAT we will do.

So, for real change to occur you MUST actively interrupt your current environment to see real growth and development in any area of your life or business. The loftier the goal, intention, or resolution, the larger the disruption must be.

Steps:

  • Declare your intention, goal, or resolution publicly.
  • Do not make the mistake of thinking you will only initiate behavior change from within.

You have to change the environment, or in other words, structures and systems that support the attitude and behaviors – the status quo.  Every way of being has an existing structure. Everything you do on a regular basis creates an environmental dependence. If you want to be another way you will have to tear down the structures that support the old way of being. If you want to build a new habit, you must figure out what environment would be conducive to that new behavior.

An example: Let us say that I wanted to change from being overweight and out of shape to being slender and athletic. I would have to change my schedule, what is in the refrigerator, how I shop, who I associate with, the clothes I wear, the books I read, and the shows I watch on television. All my systems (practices, patterns, policies and processes) would have to be evaluated for their ability to support my goal of slender and athletic.

Another example: I am a consultant who has been hired to identify why retention and productivity are so low. It doesn’t take long to identify the culture of hard work, sacrifice, and fear, conditions not conducive to retention and productivity. Some of the systems I will have to dismantle or change are e-mail outside of work hours, late afternoon or early evening meetings, what the managers do and say, how we acknowledge employees and what we acknowledge them for, communication lines, etc.

Again, when you are looking to create something new, or to change a condition or circumstance, you want to evaluate the environment that supports it and determine what needs to be dismantled and what needs to be put in place.

Time and time again I have had to reassure staff, our coaches, or clients that disruption is supposed to happen when people are in our programs. We are in the growth and development business for goodness sake :)   … we take people way outside their area of comfort so they can explore a new possibility. The first thing clients notice when in our programs is that all their old ways of doing things are insufficient for growth. This can appear to be a bad thing until conscious environmental design begins to occur.

There are two pitfalls to avoid when looking at what or how to disrupt, and therefore grow:

      • People in your life or business are the largest structure to dismantle, re-train or elicit support from. You cannot design an environment that is conducive to your growth without including others.
      • Do not underestimate small environment changes.  The simplest of changes can make all the difference. For example; you have a solid declared commitment to eat healthy yet you eat poorly at night and can’t seem to change. Each night you sit in front of the TV and eat whatever you want, while relaxing in your favorite chair. You might: rearrange the living room, move the TV, sit in a different chair, create a family dinner night where everyone sits in the dining room with TV off. Maybe you just get support from your family with never eating while watching TV? Even just one of the environment changes could be the difference.

“The Gift of Presence” by Ellen Palmer

“This year I was given a present so valuable that I couldn’t possibly keep it all for myself.   So today, I am paying it forward.

It all started this summer when I had a simple accident at the shore that resulted in a serious concussion.  I tried blowing it off, but ended up with a CAT scan and the following advice from my doctors “no activity and absolutely no multitasking until the headaches subside in a few months.” A few months?!  They further explained that no activity meant no TV, no reading, no movies, no talking on the phone, no running, jumping or playing, no computer and no working.   Seriously, there wasn’t much left except staring at the wall, sleeping, and observing.   So that is what I did, I observed the following:

1)    We are bombarded with noise, images and multiple simultaneous tasks all day. It’s amazing that we can hear ourselves think let alone be present to truly listen to someone else.

2)    We are rushed and we are rushing.

3)    Because we live in this rushed, distracted world, it is very hard to stay focused on who we are with or what we are doing at the time.  We are not truly engaged in the moment.

4)    If we aren’t present in the moment, we aren’t really listening and connecting with those around us.  We are disconnected, separate and often at odds.

5)    If we are at odds, we aren’t usually feeling happiness or comfort, but we are too busy to know how to fix it.   Good news ~ I now know.

Because we couldn’t have any noise in the house this summer, I would sit with my family at night and we would talk or play cards together.  There weren’t any “screens” to distract us and we had some of the best conversations we’ve had as a family.   We truly engaged with each other because we weren’t rushed.   We were actually paying attention to what each of us had to say!   We were present in the moment.  We all felt loved and that time together was one of the most rewarding, unexpected gifts I have ever received.

Many of us are missing the truly joyful connections that come from being present in the moment. Perhaps like us, you didn’t intend to be distracted or disconnected from the ones you love.  It just happens.   When life returned to normal after the concussion for us, we crept back into a few bad habits, but we now know what to do.  We took the “day off” together yesterday, went out to lunch and went to the movies.    We made time to truly engage with one another.

The holidays are the perfect time to reconnect.   Perhaps the least expensive, yet most rewarding gift you can give this year is your presence.”

The Middle Way is Very Simple ~

The middle way is very simple. Keep it simple and you will find the balance you have been yearning for. All extremes are fear based and destructive. Should you eat all the time? Well no, that would not be good for you. Should you stop eating all together? No, that would not be good for you. I could ask you the same questions around exercise,  work, play, relationships and on and on.  From science, we know that if you pull a pendulum 30 degrees to the right it will swing 30 degrees to the left. You do not need a philosopher to understand this.

Sometimes an extreme solution feels like a good idea. For example; if you are always alone, eat alone, go to movies alone, watch TV alone, and work alone. Being in a relationship where you are together all the time may sound good to you. The reason it seems like a good idea is that you are living in the opposite extreme. However, if you then entered into that relationship, it would not be long until you needed your space. Learning to swing your pendulum less to the left or to the right is the middle way. The middle way is that place where you are not forcing or pushing against anything.

The energy is balanced. You must first realize that everything has its opposite. This means everything has a middle point as well. Awareness of this makes the middle way possible. When you stop swinging between the opposites, you will discover far more energy than you ever imagined. What takes others hours will start to take you minutes. The things that wear other people out will not even faze you. You will learn how to manage your energy efficiently.

I am saying that most of us waste tremendous energy on extremes. The inefficiency of your actions are determined by how off center you are. When you spend lots of time trying to maintain an extreme, nothing moves forward. You get stuck in a rut. You become stuck working too hard or too little, eating too much, not sleeping, being depressed.

How do you find the middle way? How do you stop the pendulum from swinging back and forth so violently? Amazingly enough, you do this by leaving the pendulum alone. It will not keep swinging to extremes unless you feed the extremes with energy. Stop participating in the extremes and your pendulum will come to center. You will be filled with energy because you have stopped wasting it on extremes.

This is quite different from how most people live. Someone cuts you off in traffic and you could be upset for an hour or more! If you are operating it the middle way.  Things happen and they pass. You do not get pulled into upset easily. Someone cuts you off in traffic and you feel pulled towards upset…then being aware, you open your heart, release and move on. Continuous upset is a signal that you are operating in an extreme. We all get out of balance. It can be a great way to discover the middle way actually.

Awareness of your emotions will keep you from being stuck. The middle way is blind. You cannot see where you are going instead you use your cane to feel where you shouldn’t go thus finding your path.

Healthy Solutions Program – Get Healthy From The Inside Out!

Healthy Solutions is a path to a powerful relationship with your body, food and exercise. Coaching is an opportunity that few have experienced and yet so many acknowledge the wisdom of it!

Everything we want to accomplish with our health first needs to happen internally. Do you sense the truth here, but prefer not look at it? This program is for people who are finally ready to look. If you have tried everything, if you are convinced there is not a quick fix, sign up for this program. This program is for courageous people. This program is for people who do not quit.

I have been teaching health principals for several years and know one thing for a fact:
“Your habits, thoughts, language, memories and your personality have everything to do with your health! All of which have the capacity and tendency to change and grow. You have the power to start choosing rather than being at the effect of this natural tendency to change and grow!”

In the Healthy Solutions Group Coaching Program, you will:

 Create your own meal and exercise program
 Establish specific measurable goals and a plan to achieve them
 Study, investigate and learn about nutrition and health
 Handle un-addressed health concerns
 Uncover un-investigated stories that are persisting your health issues
 Discover what is true and what is not in regards to your health
 Identify situations that are likely to get in the way of your plan and create strategies
 Learn to be sourced by the future rather than the past
 Tap into resources
 Forgiveness ; “heavy thoughts make you heavy” “un-easy thoughts create dis-ease”
 Improve Body image
 Having and being enough
 Keeping your word as well as giving it!
 Being Consistent
 Judging and assessing
 Being athletic
 Vision and action
 Play!
 Personal power versus manipulation
 Fear or love motivation
 Faith
 Gratitude

This program takes 25-assignments/ weeks to complete. The cost is $180 per month (4 sessions) for six to eight months. A physical prior to starting this program is a requirement. Permission from a doctor to participate must be received by 1st session of program.

During your first few sessions, you will develop a plan to aspire to, just drop the perfectionist attitude now! We will put in place actions that are systematic and repetitive. Exercise is a natural outcome and result of being healthy. You will do exercise purely for health reasons, not for a great looking body. We will work on being healthy together; you will create your exercise program.

This is really where your program begins, you see most of us know exactly why we have the results we have. So, why don’t we do something about it? The resignation runs so deep; we just cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel.

In this program, you will get to the root of what stops you. You will confront your entire relationship to food, your body and your overall well-being. You will see that your entire identity is going to have to transform for your body and health to change.

This is where one coaching call per week as well as one call with your program buddy for 25 weeks come in. As you might have guessed, this is going to take something beyond money and time. This will take perseverance. It is much easier to ignore our health rather than pay attention to it.

If as a group, we do not complete each week’s assignment, we may not advance to the following week.

If you choose to do this program, expect to be challenged in every way. You will love and hate your coach. You will win and fail! You will experience every imaginable emotion. You might miss the calls and/or avoid your buddy. You will forget why you are doing this and your group will remind you. Your coach and group will be your commitment when you have forgotten yours. Sometimes you will feel like quitting. Your coach and your group will demand that you keep your word and that you see yourself as the healthy, successful person that you already are!

Healthy Solutions Program

The current program is complete and a new program will be starting in October. I am thrilled that the group approach was so successful and so much more affordable. I am humbled to facilitate this program. Seeing people be healthy and experience well being is a gift to me!

I am only putting 6 people in the next program . You can read about the program here.

Do the Healthy Solutions Program! It’s not about weight and exercise, it’s far more than that. I’ve grown so much in ways that I never expected to and it’s truly one of the best programs I’ve ever done. At 62 years old, I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
